A Reiki Technique for Your New Year’s Resolutions

One of my favorite hands-on healing techniques shared in traditional Reiki is called nentatsu hō. The name translates as “method for reaching beyond thought/desire/habit,” and is a helpful tool for generating new and healthy habits. It uses the power of Reiki to anchor an intention or affirmation deep into the psyche where it can flourish. In Western styles of Reiki an analogous method is known as the “deprogramming technique,” and it similarly works to instill an intention or affirmation into the mind for ongoing healing. For this reason, I love using it alongside my goals and intentions for the new year. Several versions of it are preserved and taught today, and I’ll share the simplest version I’ve learned with you here.

To begin, you’ll need to select a goal that can be phrased as an affirmation. You can try something broad, such as, “my inner peace grows every day,” or something more concrete, like “I wake up with ample energy to exercise each day.” Your affirmation can be as specific and personal as you like. When you are ready to begin nentatsu hō, bring your hands together in a prayer-like position (known as gasshō in Japanese). Spend a few moments connecting to Reiki and setting your intention to practice nentatsu hō. Once you feel the familiar presence of Reiki, you are ready to begin the practice.

Next, place one hand at the back of the head, near the point at which the spine connects to the skull; lay your other hand atop the forehead. Give yourself Reiki for several minutes, intending that Reiki will fill your mind. Now repeat your affirmation, silently or aloud, three times and let it reverberate through the space of your mind. Remove the hand from your forehead, and continue to give Reiki to the back of the head for approximately fifteen minutes. Keep your attention on the affirmation or goal, silently repeating it if your mind starts to wander.

When you are ready to complete the exercise, bring your hands back into gasshō and fill your heart and mind with gratitude. Repeat this exercise as often as you like to help you manifest your New Year’s resolutions and other goals with ease. If you would like to join me in a guided netnatsu hō and other Reiki practices, be sure to sign up for my New Year’s Reiki Share on January 9th, and you can learn more Reiki techniques in my upcoming Online Level 1 Reiki Training beginning this month.
